Mandatory Fees FAQ

Wellness & Recreation Support Fee FAQ

Why do students pay the Wellness and Recreation Support Fee if they don’t use the services every semester?

The Wellness and Recreation Support Fee ensures that recreation, health, and counseling services are available to all students in on-campus programs, whether or not they use them each term. This fee is not insurance.

The fee supports the the operation of the Recreation and Wellness Center, Campus Recreation, Student Health Services, and the University Counseling Center. Students can access these services when they are sick, injured, feeling overwhelmed, or simply need a place to decompress or work out.

The fee applies to all students of the Pittsburgh campus unless they are enrolled in a fully online degree program. Many services, like virtual counseling and online fitness programs, are accessible from anywhere.

This fee may change over time to support expanded student wellness services as the University continues to invest in student wellbeing.

Student Health Services bills insurance for services rendered. Charges may appear in PittPAY if a visit includes services not fully covered by insurance. Students sign a consent form allowing the University to bill insurance for services and can contact Student Health at (412) 383-1800 or shspitt@pitt.edu with any questions or concerns.

Transportation Fee FAQ

Why do students pay the Transportation Fee if they’re a commuter or only taking a few online classes?

The Transportation Fee helps keep essential services running year-round for all students, regardless of how often they are on campus each term. It supports Pitt shuttles, disability transportation, SafeRider, POGOH bike share, free access to Pittsburgh Regional Transit, bike infrastructure, and the blue light emergency systems on and around campus.

These services rely on consistent funding to remain safe, reliable, and available when students need them, whether it’s a quick trip to campus, a weekend ride downtown, or a safe way home after dark. To maintain service quality and adapt to rising costs, the fee amount may change over time.

International Services Fee FAQ

What is the International Services Fee, and what does it pay for?

The International Services Fee is charged each term to international, degree-seeking undergraduate students at the Pittsburgh campus. It funds a range of services designed to support international students throughout their time at Pitt, including academic, personal, and cultural support.

These services include immigration advising and compliance, tailored orientation, cultural engagement programs and events, and access to dedicated resources. The fee also supports broader international initiatives such as global outreach, recruitment efforts, and strategic scholarships.

Student Activity Fee FAQ

What is the Student Activity Fee and why is it a separate charge?

The Student Activity Fee supports student life by funding events, student organizations, service opportunities, and student-led programs such as concerts, speakers, student media, service trips, leadership workshops, and student government initiatives.

The fee is charged each term to full-time and part-time students and is managed by the student government at each campus, allowing students to help decide how the funds are used. Each campus sets its own fee based on student needs and available resources, which is why the amount varies across Pitt locations. It is kept separate from tuition to maintain transparency and ensure it directly supports student-led activities.

Computing & Network Services Fee FAQ

What does the Computing & Network Services Fee pay for, and why did it increase?

The Computing & Network Services Fee supports essential student-related technology services, including campus Wi-Fi, Canvas, Pitt email, Microsoft 365, Adobe software, cybersecurity protections, computing labs, printing, and 24/7 support from the Technology Help Desk.

The fee had remained unchanged for many years, even as technology costs such as software licenses, cybersecurity, and system maintenance continued to rise. To keep these core services secure, reliable, and accessible to students at all Pitt campuses, the fee amount at each campus may change over time.
