All students are charged certain Mandatory Fees, which vary for undergraduate and graduate students, full-time and part-time enrollment, and by University of Pittsburgh Campus. They are charged each academic term, posted to the student account when tuition is calculated, and can be seen on the Account Activity tab in PittPAY.

After being held mostly steady, select mandatory fees are increasing to ensure student needs are being effectively met. Mandatory fees cannot be waived for any reason.

Student Activity Fees for undergraduate and graduate students are collected from all full-time and part-time students each academic term. Student Activity Fees are assessed at each of the University's campuses. The fee amount is separately established at each campus.

The Wellness and Recreation Support Fee (formerly the “Wellness Fee” and "Student Health Fee") is a mandatory fee for all full-time and part-time students at the Pittsburgh Campus. It supports access to a range of student health, wellness, and recreation services, including:
- An on-campus facility staffed by medical doctors, psychiatrists, nurses, and nurse practitioners
- Includes some services not usually included in health insurance, such as dietary counseling
- Covers the co-pay required by insurance for each visit to the Student Health Services facility
- Note: This fee does not provide or pay for student health insurance.
University Counseling Center (UCC) and health and well-being programs
- Also located on campus and staffed by licensed psychologists, counselors, social workers, and other mental health professionals
- UCC services are free for all enrolled students who have paid the Recreation and Wellness Support Fee. (Note: psychological assessment services are offered for an additional fee)
- Supports health education and promotions, including “HealthyU,” a Pitt-specific initiative offering students resources and opportunities to support their mental, physical, and emotional well-being
Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) and Campus Recreation
- Supports student engagement opportunities for the Campus Recreation department, including access to the new Recreation & Wellness Center (RWC). The RWC is a transformative total health and wellness facility located in the center of campus. Features include a pool, climbing wall, state of the art equipment, a sky track, multi-purpose courts, wellness suite with health programming and promotion services, University Counseling services, the stress-free zone, and more.
- Campus Recreation programming includes intramural and club sports, esports, outdoor and adventure pursuits, and fitness programs and classes.

The Computing and Network Service Fee is a mandatory fee for all full-time and part-time students across all campuses, ensuring all students have equitable access to the technology and tools essential for academic success.
This fee supports the ongoing licensing, upgrades, and maintenance of the University’s student-related computing and technology systems. It includes:

- The Canvas learning management system

The International Services Fee is mandatory each term for full time, degree-seeking, undergraduate international students attending the Pittsburgh campus. Two of the priorities of The Plan for Pitt are to embody diversity and inclusion and to engage with the world. In support of this plan and with an eye toward the future, the University of Pittsburgh intends to increase the number of international students on campus and simultaneously improve the international Pitt student experience. The International Services Fee will support increasing international enrollment to that of peer institutions – approximately eight to ten percent of the undergraduate student population, expanding the breadth and depth of our international recruitment efforts, and offering strategic scholarships to attract the top international students to Pittsburgh.

Why do students pay the Wellness and Recreation Support Fee if they don’t use the services every semester?
The Wellness and Recreation Support Fee ensures that health, counseling, and recreation services are available to all students in on-campus programs, whether or not they use them each term. This fee is not insurance.
The fee supports the Student Health Services, the University Counseling Center, Campus Recreation, and the operation of the new Recreation and Wellness Center. Students can go directly to these services when they are sick, injured, feeling overwhelmed, or simply need a place to decompress or work out.
The fee applies to all students of the Pittsburgh campus unless they are enrolled in a fully online degree program. Many services, like virtual counseling and online fitness programs, are accessible from anywhere.
This fee may change over time to support expanded student wellness services as the University continues to invest in student wellbeing.
The fee also covers co-pays for standard visits. Additional charges may appear in PittPAY if a visit includes services not fully covered by insurance, such as lab work or psychological testing. Students sign a consent form allowing the University to bill insurance for these services and can review the details in the Student Health Portal or contact Student Health at (412) 383-1800 or shspitt@pitt.edu with any questions.

The Computing & Network Services Fee supports essential student-related technology services, including campus Wi-Fi, Canvas, Pitt email, Microsoft 365, Adobe software, cybersecurity protections, computing labs, printing, and 24/7 support from the Technology Help Desk.
The fee had remained unchanged for many years, even as technology costs such as software licenses, cybersecurity, and system maintenance continued to rise. To keep these core services secure, reliable, and accessible to students at all Pitt campuses, the fee amount at each campus may change over time.

In addition to mandatory University fees, students enrolled in a major resulting in an MBA degree, MS degree, Graduate Certificate or Micro-Credential are assessed a mandatory Student Development fee according to their program. The fee is applicable to students regardless of Pennsylvania or Out-of-State residency.
